An Interactive Light & Sound Installation
colour-emotion-sound association
The Sound Tree is a 360-degree interactive installation exploring the emotional impact of colour and sound, based on principles of colour theory, sound therapy, and sensory design.
The Project
Conceptualised and built in collaboration with studio partner, Amanda Brayham, the project translates emotional states into an immersive light and audio experience designed to encourage calm and self-awareness in overstimulating environments.
The installation responds to the surrounding audio atmosphere, detecting stress-inducing noise levels and disruptive frequencies. When the environment is agitated or overwhelming, the tree emits chaotic, less harmonious light and sound patterns, encouraging users to reflect on their surroundings. As calm is restored, through quieter behaviour or soothing sound input, the tree responds in kind, glowing with therapeutic colours and playing frequencies associated with emotional balance and tranquility. This response loop allows users to interact with the tree in a way that fosters awareness of how sound and space impact their wellbeing.
The tree structure was carefully designed and fabricated using lightweight materials to support a seamless 360-degree experience. The framework integrated responsive lighting strips, ambient sound components, and translucent coloured panels. A custom-built sound sensor system enabled real-time feedback and environmental monitoring.
Throughout the making process, we experimented with different colour palettes, light diffusion techniques, and sound frequency combinations, testing for emotional resonance, comfort, and clarity of feedback. Particular care was taken to ensure the installation remained accessible, calming, and intuitive.
To function effectively, The Sound Tree requires a clear two-metre radius to allow audiences to fully engage with its form and interactivity from all angles, transforming any environment into a reflective sanctuary.
