Tryget(OVER)phobia

Tryget(OVER)phobia

Tryget(OVER)Phobia is an immersive simulation using distraction tactics, for people who suffer from a fear of needles and injections, known as Trypanophobia.

Project complete with Louis Lambert.

We have created a fun and engaging simulation for someone (adult or child) to experience while they are seated having their injection in a doctor’s office. The ‘player’ is looking out onto a colourful and interesting mountain landscape, using their gaze to locate hovering crystals.

Once they have located them, they lock their gaze on the crystal until it disappears.

We have three reasons why we have created this simulation the way it looks/works:

  1. The ‘player’ will be seated the entire time due to the situation, therefore we decided to use gaze instead of hands to interact with the simulation.

  2. The landscape is low poly, almost cartoonish, though not child-like. This simulation is engaging for both children and adults, considering both spectrums come under the 10% of people affected by Trypanophobia.

  3. The simulation is short and easy, designed to be the duration of a normal injection experience (sitting down, doctor preparing, instantaneous injection and release/bandage).

We used the built-in gaze tracking software from the Oculus SDK. We did not use any assets from the unity store, we created all the 3D models through Blender. As our ‘player’ cannot use their hands in this scenario we could not have implemented this as a keyboard or mouse experience.
